Hi there! My name is Trina and I am the illustrator and owner of the Tenderfolk Co. brand. For those of you who have been following my Instagram account @trinayoungfieldart, you are already somewhat familiar with me and my vision for this new venture. For those of you who haven’t been following along previously, welcome!
Tenderfolk Co. is the realization of a dream I have had since I was about 5 years old. Looking back to my earliest days, I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t interested in drawing. Like most young children I enjoyed coloring and being creative. As I grew a little older my dad started reading comic books like Garfield and Calvin and Hobbes at bedtime to my siblings and me. I have such happy memories of those times and it was then that I quickly gained a love and excitement for the illustrations covering those pages. I wanted to be able to draw the images I saw in those books so I started sneaking paper and No. 2 pencils out of my dad’s home office in order to copy the illustrations. From that point on drawing became a passion for me.
I don’t have a ton of memories from early grade school but there is one event in particular that my mind often returns to. One morning during my 1st grade year my classmates and I were filed into a room for a small assembly. The speaker on this occasion was a children’s book illustrator (I wish I could remember who it was!) and he proceeded to talk about his books and his job as an artist. I still remember him drawing up on the whiteboard a picture of a dinosaur! This is the first time I had really ever thought about illustration as something someone did for a living and I was enthralled. I remember sitting there and thinking, “This is what I want to do. I want to be an illustrator when I grow up!”
During my undergrad years at Wellesley College, I majored in Studio Art with an emphasis in oil painting and sculpture. It was an education that I consider to be invaluable to me today. It’s where I first learned to paint and many of the techniques I use today come from my education. In order to help afford my way through school I worked part-time as an assistant teacher for a local day care. This was another significant moment in my life as I realized that I had a love and talent for teaching young children. Eventually this discovery led me down the path of obtaining a MA in Speech Language Pathology from the University of Utah. I have worked as a speech therapist for the past few years and love every minute of it!
My hope with the Tenderfolk Co. brand is to merge both art and education in order to encourage the creativity of young children. My desire is to give them a piece of the magic I found during my childhood bedtime readings and spark in them a love of learning and of this world around them.
I hope you will join me on this journey and follow along here to see my weekly blog posts and on Instagram @tenderfolkco to see daily updates.
